Log Splitter abandoned 10 years ago, Can It Be Saved?

a fellow youtuber Jason, aka 5150mxvw got a lead on a busted up log splitter near him that was for sale cheap and gave me a call, lets see if we can find out why it failed and if we can bring it back to life.

That style of splitter is normally ran in the raised position. Not laid down. There is usually a catch table on the ones made to run in the horizontal position and as you can see that one has nothing to keep the log from falling on the engine and hydraulics.

lol that kohler magnum 10 is 3 times the engine needed for that splitter but it's a good solid unit. Top screw is high end. side screw is idle. think the original pin for those splitters was a pin with a steel bushing. I like your rubber idea better less rattly. I'll keep the playing with your wood jokes to a minimum :D

Looks like this splitter has an auto return. When you start to pull the plunger back the handle sticks. That should be by design. Once the piston is in the full rear position it will kick it back to middle. That is the way mine works. You would normally stand where the gas tank is, but it seems you may have figured that out.

Its usually operated while lying down in most cases unless your splitting huge logs then you tilt it up. many folks weld or bolt on a cradle so they don't have to bend over all the time and pick up the logs while splitting them that fall down. The cradle prevents that, so basically its a good addition to the log splitter. Sounds like an ole Acadian Boat Motor with that muffler.

I have the 35 ton version bought new in 07 with a vertical 12 1/2 Hp Briggs. I use it 100% in the vertical, I removed the jack and replaced it with a dolly wheel and a draw bar with a handle and 2" trailer coupler to roll it around, or back of the ATV. Push it up to the wood pile, tilt it up and go to town. Sitting on a log or a wheeled garden bench. Added the Electrics from a blown 15hp of the same model year for electric start and lights for splitting into the evening. added a 6 Gal gas can for the long haul LOL. and an Umbrella holder for those table sized Umbrellas. I have the parts to "Self Propel" it and a lift cylinder to raise the Beam up. Mike M.

My wife bought me what seems to be that same splitter. It came from Tractor Supply. It' about 18 yrs. old and I still use it. I believe mine has a Tecumseh engine. I believe some model years had Kohler engines. I was never a big Tecumseh fan but that engine has sat for 9 mo. And started on the third pull. It still powers the splitter. I operate from the engine side because of the hyd. lever location.

THANK YOU FOR, YET ANOTHER, GREAT REPAIR/BUILD !!! * You asked the question, whether the Log Splitter was used Horizontally or Vertically more often. Horizontal, if it's smaller logs. Vertically, if the logs are big and heavy. You can barrel-roll a log, on its end, up onto the splitter, when it's Vertical. It is laid back just enough that the log won't fall back out while you're splitting it. * Most pipe fittings are "cast-iron" and won't get a good weld. you have to "Braise" instead. If it's "cast steel", you can weld to it and it will take. * You bet us you would make a mess while pouring the hydraulic oil out of the 5 gallon barrel. You can get a "c-vent" that goes thru the pouring hole and it clips onto the spout and goes back inside the bucket you're pouring from, and introduces air into the container. This allows glug-glug-free pouring. THANKS AGAIN for a great video, and thanks for showing the finish and final check-out of your Bass Boat. Bill, from Tn. 🇺🇸

Kohlers have a centrifugal compression release...to make starting easier... but when the engine spins to over 1000rpm the compression release stops and full compression is achieved in the cylinder..... So hooking up a drill driver to the shaft and spinning it over 1000rpm would give you the full compression figure....

Make a little stool to sit on. Split it the ram vertical. Gather all the rounds around you sitting at the stool in front of the splitter vertical. After you finish, reach over and grab another without getting up. The control automatically kicks out at the end of retract, so you don’t have to hold it. Since you don’t have to hold the control, you reposition the wood for the next split while the ram is retracting. When you have a split piece, toss it near where you are going to make your stack. Work till all your rounds are done, the gather another group of rounds. Split till the tank is empty, stop rest eat lunch.

Edjumication and hi falutin' thinkin' causes regional variations.... Terminology Set screw or setscrew in the UK refers to a bolt which is fully threaded, with no smooth shank. These commonly have a hex head, but are also found with socket or screw heads.[2] This contrasts with usage in the US where a set screw is almost universally a grub screw or small-headed bolt.[1] A fully threaded bolt is commonly called a cap screw in the US.[2]

Hi Mustie, I bought a Speeco 22 ton log splitter at least 30 years ago and it gets used a lot!! It's been very reliable. The only thing I had to do to it was to replace the hydro valve because it would no longer stay in the up position. When you push the handle up it should release automatically when the ram gets to the top. You don't have to hold it. This is very important because it allows you get ready for the next split while the ram is raising. I use my splitter in the vertical position and I discovered that if I bring a supply of wood near the splitter, I can sit on a 5 gallon pail, or whatever, and it really saves my back. I split mainly oak which is very tough , but the 22 ton splitter has no problem with it. I leave the splitter hooked up to my tractor while splitting as well. That way I can move it any time I want to. Also I leave my trailer on another tractor, (JD 318 BTW), parked next to me so I can toss the wood into it without ever getting off my butt! This works so well that I've been doing it for years.

Cool Video..but 99.9% of the Time We/I Always Split wood with the Splitter laying Down & Just pick the wood up..Unless It Is Extremely Huge ..Its Just Easier on the ole Back !
