WILL IT RUN? 83 Year old Antique Marine Pump.

l picked up this old engine powered marine/fire pump from an estate sale a while ago and its been sitting on a shelf until now, lets see if it has any life left in it.

Did you know it has bronze gears in it to handle saltwater 🤯

The reason there is no governor is that the engine is throttled against the water pressure load which is supposed to be constant according to the laws of physics. Thar maintains the engine at a fairly constant speed. I want to see the pump internals, water pumps fascinate me.

The gears are similar to a hydraulic pump, creating high pressure with lower volume, there should be a displaced around the gears to make the gears force the water to a high pressure, lubrication is not necessary as the water pressure matins a water gap between the mesh of the gears.

I think the lever on top of the "muffler" may be a primer, close it to prime out of the bottom, open for run. I could be totally wrong

I am late to seeing this one but all the marine pumps I use have a handle with a disk on the end that you close off the exhaust with to bring the pressure of the pump up to help the priming. The lever over the hole is probably the same idea just from a long time ago.

I'm curious if it would help getting it to run at idle if the exhaust was put back on. The adjustable port on top of the exhaust I'm wondering if that is to add back pressure to the exhaust.

Red might just be color coding for damage-control/fire fighting equipment. Ships do things like that (color code the various systems; potable water, waste water, hydraulics, etc.)

"This" on the top of the exhaust manifold be a decompression valve ? Would the crest on the truck door, US FOREST SERVICE? Plantation ## where the pump is supposed to be located. When I first saw the pump my thought was 'forest fire' the crest/decal on the door kind of reinforced my thought. The equipment display beside the truck would be a deciding factor. Standard 1.5 inch pipe thread could work as hose couplings. Goggle Pacific Marine Supply a lot of companies of the same name, some selling pumps.

i was watching your farmland tractor engine change you had a problem taking off the crankshaft pully it's a tapered fit the next time you run into this drill a hole through the side of the pully to the crankshaft (not where the key is)) tap and put a zerk fitting into it and pump grease into the fitting the the grease pressure will release the tapered fit this works for ALL stuck tapers sorry i'm 4 years late with this information

I think you can make an adapter for your drill like that ratchet adapter you've used by using a bicycle sprocket . with your horde , you can use a big socket that will fit the outside perimeter of the sprocket that you can connect to your drill ...and the middle part of the sprocket, you can connect an adapter for any socket that you will use to turn the flywheel so once it spans the middle part will just turn freely with the flywheel so it will not kick you when it starts :D

I thought those water lines that went over to the exhaust were priming lines at first because the P100 pumps they use in the Coast Guard do that to get suction. Looks like they just cool and muffle the exhaust from what I can tell.

Austin 7 engined portable fire pumps in New Zealand had the same arrangement. The engine was cooled by the pumped water, but when the engine was started a valve was opened that pumped exhaust through a venturi at the pump which created a vacuum. This sucked the water up into the pump...you had to time it just right, close the handle and start pumping water to cool the engine... The whole arrangement was usually carried by 4 men to the edge of the water supply.... Start was by crank handle..... I've helped carry one and used it to empty a whole swimming pool.....great fun.

Is anybody else disappointed he didn't get into the crankcase? Normally in a two stroke the compression from the downward stroke of the piston is used to supercharge the mix going into the piston, but with this one having two opposing pistons that doesn't seem like it should work unless the crank case is sectioned off on two sides, but I'm not sure how that would be done with only one big opening for the fuel mixer to feed it. Maybe some kind of valve on the crank that only opens one side or the other? Without the supercharging nature of the normal 2 stroke crankcase I don't know how it forces the air/fuel mix into the cylinder and avoids having the exhaust backfeed into the crankcase. It is also remarkable how well preserved this engine is compared to the other.

Its a Handy Billy used by the USCG and USN in 40s-60s 1-1/2 fire hose, and dewatering pump. The gas can was above the pump and motor inside a tubular frame. With the frame two sailors could carry the unit quickly. The hinged side cover is where the starter cord was stored. The motor is a OMC Johnson. Bearings are roller pins. We had one surplus unit FROM USN BASE Mare Island CA. I've had the engine downtown parade rest and back together made all my own gaskets and it ran well just mixed a little extra oil in the gas.
